Tibetan Monks
The Tibetan Monks of the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Southern India will be in Richmond, VA at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1000 Blanton Avenue, from May 8 – May 13. The monks will be creating a sand mandala and teaching meditation as well as hosting a puja healing ceremony and a ceremonial pageant.

These monks travel throughout the country raising money for their monastery of 2,000 monks. The monasteries are the center of Tibetan Life in India since the expulsion of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1959. India has provided protection as well as medical care and education to Tibetans fleeing persecution in Tibet.

The opening ceremony will take place at 7 pm on Monday May 8, and meditation instruction will be each day at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. beginning Tuesday May 9 through Friday May 12. A Puja Healing ceremony will be held Tuesday May 9 at 7 p.m. and a Snow Leopard Pageant will be held at 7 pm Thursday evening. The week will conclude with a closing ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning May 13. The closing ceremony will begin at the Unitarian Universalist Church and will continue at the Japanese Gardens in Maymont Park with blessings using sand from the mandala.

The public is warmly invited to all of these events.
